Lecture: The Church of England in Colonial Virginia
By Robert J. Teagle, Executive Director at the Foundation for Historic Christ Church in Weems, Virginia,
How did the Church of England influence the church life in Colonial Virginia?
How was a parish in Virginia defined?
Did you know the “power” of a parish – 12 men (the vestry) governed important social roles, such as marking property lines, monitoring behavior, caring for the sick and needy, and registering births, deaths and marriages. For most Virginians, the parish—not the county court or colony government–was the unit of government that exercised the greatest influence on their day-to-day lives.
