The Mathews Maritime Museum is owned and operated by the Mathews Maritime Foundation.


In April, the Museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM, provided we have volunteers to operate.   Visitors can call ahead at the number above, to confirm opening or to arrange other times to visit. Mathews County has an extensive Maritime history from the late 1600s to the present day.  The people of Mathews have worked the local waters, and around the world, in locally made vessels, or as crew in Naval, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and commercial shipping.

The museum’s collection currently numbers over 1,900 items. Collections include:


Lighthouses • Boatbuilding Tools • Watermen Tools • Various Types of    Boat  Artifacts • Nautical Books • Models of Boats • US Navy Relics • Civil War Memorabilia • Merchant Mariner Artifacts • Navigational Tools and Charts • Photos, Photos, Photos • Education • Nautical Clothing and Gear • Commercial Maritime Items

Free admission ~ Donations accepted

When volunteers are available, we are open from 10 am-2 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, April to November.
