Timberneck House Tour

We are kicking off the fall with a field trip to Timberneck House and Abingdon Church in historic Gloucester County on September 21st! 

We will begin our morning at historic Abingdon Church in Gloucester, VA.  Abingdon Parrish was founded Circean 1650.  Remains of the original brick foundation completed in 1655 can be found inside the south wall of the church grounds.  Abingdon church includes two buildings plus a walled graveyard.  The Fairfield Foundation is working in collaboration with the Parrish congregation in search of evidence of the 17th century church.

Built in the 1790's for the Catlet family, Timberneck house is a beautiful example of the Federal period style. Located in Machicomoco State Park, the home is the site of ongoing restoration efforts by the Fairfield Foundation. Long before there was a Timberneck House, this land was home to native tribes of Virginia. Our morning will include an interpretive walking tour of this land and its history. Join us for this information morning in Virginia middle peninsula. And top off the afternoon with lunch in one of our nation's oldest towns. 

Tour of Abingdon Church will begin at 9:30 am.  Abingdon Church is located at 4645 George Washington Memorial Hwy., Gloucester, VA. Parking is available in the church parking lot.  Please plan on arriving no later than 9:20am. 

Following our tour of Abingdon Church everyone will drive to Timberneck House located in Machicomoco State Park, 3601 Timberneck Farm Road, Hayes VA.  This is about a 10-minute drive. Our tour of Timberneck House and discussion of The Fairfield Foundation will be led by The Fairfield Foundation.  The tour of Timberneck House will begin at 11:00am.

Following the tour of Timberneck House you have the option of taking in the beauty and history of the interpretive trails at Machicomoco State Park or you can visit the quaint town of Gloucester.

Join us for lunch at Kelsick Specialty Market in Gloucester.  Lunch Menu will be sent out via email prior to September 21st.  Lunch orders may be placed on the day of our trip.  Please register for lunch in order for us to get a head count for the market.

ITINERARY

• 9:20AM - Arrive at Abingdon Church  - 4645 George Washington Memorial Highway, Gloucester
• 9:30AM - Tour of Abingdon Church
• 10:30 - Drive to Machicomoco State Park and meet at Timberneck House
• 11:00AM - Tour of Timberneck House

Interpretive trail walks and lunch at Kelsick Speciality Market to follow the tour at Timberneck.
